Merrill W. and Elizabeth B. (Duryea) Williams
25532 ELIZABETH ANN WILLIAMS m. 20 Apr. 1868 ROBERT M. GALLOWAY.
    Children:

    *35119 JOHN MACY GALLOWAY b. 20 Sep. 1871

Dillion and Mary C. (Truman) Williams
25536 HENRY TRUMAN WILLIAMS b. 01 Apr 1843; m. 11 Feb. 1884 Chicago, Cook, Il. CLARA JEANETTE CAUSEY “NETTIE” b 1842 Illinois d 10 Sep 1925 Franklin, Arkansas she m 1st Robert Haynes.

Charles R. Dodge, of Washington, DC, named a Colorado ?moth? after Henry T. Williams, Arctica williamsi, in Canadian Entomologist (1868), 3(1): 167.

The son of a Congregational/Presbyterian minister from old New England, he graduated from New York University in 1863 and became a reporter and explorer.

By the early 1870's he had formed his own publishing company mostly publishing books and pamphlets aimed at women it is fair to that he was the inventor of "The Ladies Home Journal style" of literature. In 1872 he published, “A Tourist Guide and Map of the San Juan Mines”, which was important enough to be reprinted in 1956. When it first appeared, Williams was not yet 30. “The Pacific Tourist” described the transcontinental railroad route and gave details about the Pikes Peak Region and it was incredibly successful.

In the 1870’s Henry T. Williams was a botanical editor of some note (The Horticulturalist) and a self-styled "agent" for rail tours of the west (Colorado, Texas, and the Mormon Territory) before he removed to Chicago.

However he hooked up with the Texas people around 1879 and sold his business interests to finance the group. By 1884 he apparently divested his publishing interests in the East and was never heard of again in botanical circles.

Paralleling this life were his religious interests, beginning in 1879 in Brooklyn where he established (or joined) a religious cult whose main belief was faith healing and care of the afflicted – primarily, as it turned out, the raising of infant children.

The "strange story" is that in addition to being an author, editor and publisher of a variety of books in the 1870's Henry Truman Williams went on to become the leader (and "Altar") of a religious group made up largely of people from central Texas. The had group homes more-or-less on the Shaker model in Arkansas, Chicago, Texas, the Colorado Springs area and started off believing an imminent second advent. Eventually the group died out.

The group was controversial wherever they were because they did not believe that civil law was above their view of God's law. They got into legal trouble in Texas, Chicago and Denver and pretty much got ran out of town from those places.

Except for Henry T Williams, most of the Williamites came from Navarro & Hill Counties in Texas. In 1878 a group formed led by Robert Haynes. Also in 1880, Robert Haynes, his wife Nettie, [Clara Jeanette Causey] were living in Brooklyn, New York. Tere are references to them as the "Corsicana Enthusiasts" on the web but much of that is incomplete.

They believed in sanctification and that what is now called "The Rapture" was imminent. They also got people upset because if on member of a marriage joined but the partner did not, they would abandon their spouse and in some cases children. Over a hundred people from Texas moved to Arkansas around 1880 to live in a "Home" that was set up by Henry T Williams who had taken over the leadership by then.

A "Williamite cult Home" in Chicago in 1884 contained Henry Williams and his wife, Clara "Nettie” Causey Haynes Williams and other members of the group as well as some "orphans" taken in by the group. They decided to move to Denver, so several of the adults left to set up the new Home and raise funds. The Chicago authorities and the Chicago Humane Society swooped in and arrested the adults and put the children into orphanages.

The upshot of that was that after a month in jail, the adults were released without charges but the children were kept hidden and apparently the parents were told that the children had died in an epidemic - a total of eight children.

The Williamites did try to set up in Denver but the Humane Society followed them and new charges of abuse and dead infants were raised there but again tossed out of court. The Colorado group moved to the area that is now Colorado Springs, Woodland Park and Divide Colorado where they set up new Homes.

An accounting of the group in Colorado is found titled - Williamite Followers Held Strict but Unorthodox Religious Beliefs from the Old Colorado City Historical Society 1 March 1991:
He was an educated man from a distinguished family who pioneered tourism in the region and rubbed elbows with the rich and famous...

While publishing tourist guides, William brought groups of editor and capitalists to the region. In one such expedition in 1870 was William J. Palmer and his bride-to-be Queen Mellon. The group came from Denver, spent the night in Colorado City, then rode horses over the Meas. A suggestion from Queen Mellon led to naming one canon after their leader – hence, Williams Canon. And Williams reciprocated by naming another canon Queen’s Cannon...

Williams and his clan settled at 527 E. Dale in Colorado Springs. He came to public attention when a Mr. Riley came from Denver to reclaim his wife who he said had been recruited by the Williamites. With the help of her parents here she was adjudged insane and returned to Denver. Williams insisted, “She came here through no persuasion of mine but was sent through divine influence.

City official discouraged the three men, 10 women and 12 children, but Williams bought property “west of the Monument”, between Platte and Pikes Peak, and Limit and Williams St. Their original home at 832 W. Bijou still stands. Here the devotees planted crops and orchards and built greenhouses to establish “Williams Gardens”...

Williamites, even after Henry Williams had left were often embroiled in litigation...

The property was homestead by R. W. Groves, a Williamite since the Brooklyn days. After he proved up the land he gave it to Williams to use for God’s glory, but never arranged a deed. When Groves died without a will he family claimed the land and Williams went to court to claim it as his own. The courts gave ownership to Williams...

The property was in Williams’ name – not that of the cult or a corporation...

Williams wasn’t the messiah of a new age but in a since he had a permanent influence of the community. More than one family which was first associated with the Williamites showed up later as florists or gardeners. If they are the same people, they learned their trade at Williams Gardens.

At Williams death in 1915, his heirs, - his wife and five children – left the property on Bijou to the Williamite colony...

Williams and his followers were unquestionably sincere. Despite iron-fisted-rule, Henry T. Williams must have had remarkable Charisma to inspire dedicated followers to turn over all worldly goods and put into his hands their whole future – both material welfare and their eternal souls.

From History and Mysteries of Catamount Ranch Open Space Prepared by: Kimberly M. Carsell and Kimberle C. Long County Interns Teller County Division of Parks September 2000:
Henry Truman Williams and the Williamites religious sect were active in the area from 1890 to 1910. Williams Creek runs from the current Catamount Ranch Open Space north to Trout Creek. The story of Henry Truman Williams and the Williamites can be traced to Chicago, where the Williamites operated under the guise of caring for abused children. Reports of sexual abuse from members, who had left the sect, began to circulate forcing Williams move to Denver. The Humane Society of Chicago called Denver to report Williams’ activities. Williams then moved to Colorado City and on to Edlowe.

Henry Williams “probably the most colorful character ever to be associated with this area, was a man of tremendous charismatic who claimed to be God’s chosen messenger on earth”. Williams convinced followers to give him all their worldly possessions, leading to the ownership of 480 acres around Edlowe. Williams is said to have run a camp for wayward youth. The males lived on the side of the road (old Highway 24) and females on the south side. Only Williams was allowed to go to the women’s side of the road. This lasted until locals became suspicious when several of the women from the camp became pregnant. Rumor has it that Williams is buried somewhere in the area, but his grave has never been found.

John Lucas, 1891, homesteaded the area and Lucas deeded his land to Williams in 1894.

The story says that the ones who moved to Arkansas lived pretty much like the Shakers with men and women and children all in separate buildings and all members transferred all of their money to Henry T Williams. That "Home" fell apart around 1884 and most moved back Texas though a few joined the others in Colorado. This is found in THE CORSICANA ENTHUSIASTS: A PRE-PENTECOSTAL MILLENNIAL SECT by Barry W. Hamilton, PhD. Northeastern Seminary (Rochester, NY):
Tragically, the ‘enthusiasts’ fell prey to the stratagems of Henry T. Williams, who lured them to Little Rock as a preparation for the Second Coming. Families sold their farms and other possessions to raise money for the trip, on arrival turned over their money to Mr. Williams and his agents. These people were strongly motivated by fear, even panic, and in their ignorance gave up rights to property and family for the ‘sake of the Kingdom.’ Only after several weeks did the majority recognize the scheme to deprive them of their property, and make the return trip to Navarro County, “poorer and sadder,” but “a wiser people.”

Henry T Williams owned all the property and maintained a number of homes in Ozark, Arkansas; Corpus Christi, and Colorado for himself and the group.
