The group had split with one faction led by Kaokuk and the other by Black Hawk, i.e, Black Hawk War. After the defeat of Black Hawk in 1832, the tribe removed to Iowa where they remained for 13 years. Subsequently, they moved to the Osage River Reservation in Kansas where they stayed for another 23 years. In 1869, the pressure of white settlers forced a moved to Indian Territory, ie. Oklahoma) He went with them up into IA to their farm on the Des Moines River, from there to Rockford IL. In 1844 he went into the lumber woods on the St Croix River and was there when Minnesota was organized as a territory. He slept in the loft of his log cabin used as a store, where St Paul is now. A Mr Jackson kept the store and traded with the Indians. On his way up the Mississippi he sailed on the steamer "Old Seceeder," commanded by Captain Frog Morton. In 1845 he went to the Lake Superior mining region and worked the mines 1845 to 1847. After his marriage he removed to IA and settled on a farm of 260 acres. In 1863 he went to California and spent time there as a teamster. In 1868 he was run over by a wagon loaded with 2.5 cords of dry oak, the wheels passing length-wise over this body. While recovering his wife caught cold and she never recovered, dying of consumption. In 1872 to came to KS with three children and purchased a farm of 80 acres. He attended medical lectures and graduated at Cleveland, the term of 1848-49, and the same year, removed to Appleton WI. There is practiced medicine until the year 1856, when he went to Kansas. During the war of the rebellion, he was appointed Surgeon of a Kansas Regiment, and was in the Department of Tennessee. He was taken prisoner with his regiment, and himself was compelled to serve as surgeon to the rebel sick and wounded. He was overtasked, and fell sick with pneumonia. The funeral of Mrs. Jean McGregor Beach, who died Saturday morning, March 5, was held Monday afternoon from the Synder home at Dover. It was one of the most impressive funerals held in eastern Kansas for some time, the funeral procession being over one-half mile long.

Mrs. Jean McGregor Beach was one of the original settlers of this part of Kansas. In the spring of 1858 Dr. and Mrs. Beach moved to this state settling on Mission Creek in Wabaunsee county. Mrs. Beach lived on this creek the rest of her life, having completed over a half century in this locality at the time of her death Saturday.

She was born April 6, 1824, the daughter of John and Isabelle (Brock) McGregor in Hamilton, Scotland. Immigrating to America with her parents at the age of four years, she landed in Canada where they lived for one year and then moved into the states. Their first residence in this country was in Vermont. Later they moved to Medina Co, Ohio, where Mrs. Beach's girlhood days were spent.

She was married to Samuel E Beach of Wadsworth, Ohio, October 8, 1846. Dr. and Mrs. Beach then moved to Appleton, Wis., where Dr Beach practiced medicine for nine years. In the Spring of 1858 they moved to Kansas and settled on Mission Creek in Wabaunsee county near the place where she died Saturday morning.

In the Spring of 1863 Dr Beach enlisted in the Eighth regiment, Kansas volunteers, as assistant surgeon. He died at Nashville, Tenn., November 5, 1863. Mrs Beach was left to raise her family of three children, William Keith Beach, John McGregor Beach, both of Keene, and Mrs, Henrietta Beach Synder of Dover, Kan., who still survive her.

For the past 30 years Mrs Beach has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Henrietta Snyder at Dover. Mrs Beach was loved by all who knew her. She was very well known in Topeka and visited this city frequently. A number of Topeka people attended the funeral. Topeka State Journal, March 8, 1910.
