5118 MARY EMERY m. 10 May 1772 JEREMIAH HILL JR. b. 1747 d. 1820 s/o Jeremiah and Mary (Smith) Hill. He is said to have raised a company for three year's service during the Revolutionary War. His company joined the regiment of Col. Vose at West Point, and was at the surrender of Burgoyne, October 1777. He resigned his commission at the end of a year and returned home. In 1799, he was appointed Adjutant General of the State forces on the Penobscot River; collector of Customs for the district of Saco, 1799-1809; member of Massachusetts Legislature six consecutive terms; received the honorable degree of M.A. from Harvard College, 1787. It is said he commanded a company at the battle of Bunker Hill.

His Revolutionary War service spanned more than four years, starting with his enlistment on 28 April 1775 in Capt. Abishai Brown's Co., Col John Nixon's 5th Regiment of Massachusetts Militia, in which he served for three months and eleven days including at the Battle of Bunker Hill. On 4 February 1776 he marched with Capt. Asahel Wheeler's Co., Col. John Robinson's Regiment, in which he remained for one month and twenty-eight days. Between 29 April 1777 and 31 December 1779 he appears to have been enlisted in the Continental Army continuously. He enlisted in Capt. Simon Hunt's Cop., Col. Ebenezer Brook's Regiment, and subsequently served in Capt. William Toogood's Co., Col. Thomas Nixon's Regiment. He was at the surrender of Buroyne at Saratoga on 17 October 1777 and the assault by Gen. Anthony Wayne at Stoney Point, New York, on 16 July 1779. In 1779 he was in Capt. Thomas Barn's Light Infantry Co. of Col. Nixon's Regiment. His service between 1 January and 21 December 1780, when he was in Capt. Abel Holden's Co. of Nixon's Regiment. He was taken Prisoner on 3 February 1780 and remained a prisoner at N Virginia for over ten months. Although official records seem vague on his having still been enlisted so late, it is said that he was at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown on 19 October 1781. He enlisted on 24 April 1775 as Private on Capt. Abishai Brown's Co., Col. John Nixon's 5th Regiment, for three and a half months. His service that year included action at the battle of Bunker Hill on 17 June 1775. On 30 September 1775, Samuel was reported sick and absent, but by 4 February 1776 he was again marching out in Capt. Asahel Wheeler's Co., Col. John Robinson's Reg. He returned by 27 February 1776. On 1 April 1777 he enlisted in Capt. William Toogood's 5th Co. of Col. Thomas Nixon's 6th Regiment of the Continental Army. On. 1 August 1777 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Thereafter he participated in the Battle of Saratoga. He remained in the Army through the next two and half years until his honorable discharge on 1 April 1780. He was in camp near Peekshill,NY on 16 February 1779, at Highlands in May 1779, and at Peekshill, reported sick, in September 1779. By November 1779 he was in Capt. Benjamin Heywood's Co. of Col. Nixon's Regiment. He was honorably discharged "at a place called Soldier's Fortune, near West Point.

Samuel and his first wife are buried in the W. Ripley Cemetery. He d. 9 October 1836.

"On 8 October 1839 I (Cyrus P.), with my father John Emery, my mother...their children...started across N Virginia from Moriah to Buffalo with two covered wagons and two pair of horses. At Buffalo the wagons, horses, and the family were taken on board a steamboat and traversed Lake Erie to Toledo where we left the boat and started northwest out of Ohio into Michigan. We traveled west across the state, crossing the northwest corner of Indiana. Then into Illinois to Chicago, From Chicago west across Illinois via Napierville, Aurora, Dixon and Miledgeville to Savanah on the Mississippi River arriving near December the same not crossable on account of floating ice. Out destination was Mokequeta (Maquoketa) four miles west of the river. We were advised to go down river to Fullerton (Fulton) to cross. We went and found the crossing no better". This is from the diary of Cyrus P. it also says that Lucinda d. August 1840 at Lyons, Ia. and John died later that year. It lists the children also listed below.

He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, being a member in 1784, the second year of its opening. He was living in Exeter, New Hampshire in February 1786 with his wife and daughter. Afterwards, year unknown he sailed on a ship as supercargo; was wrecked, rescued and taken to London where, he afterwards wrote, "I was pressed in March 1793". Hard service on the continent, captured and imprisonment followed. A letter written by him on board "H. M. Ship Triumph , Portsmo' Harb (Eng)" dated 20 December 1804 addressed to his brother Noah and asking his friends to take measures for his liberation, gave the last that was heard from him. Every effort was made in his behalf but in vain.
