1587 NOAH EMERY m. 20 Nov. 1745 Exeter, York, Me. JOANNA PERRYMAN b. 14 Nov. 1731 d. 1 Apr. 1814 d/o Nicholas and Janna (Dudley) Perryman She was a lineal descendant of the 5th generation of Thomas Dudley, 2nd governor of Ma. Noah Emery, before the end of his minority, became a resident of Exeter, NH. In 1746, he was already settled there with his wife and child. He studied his profession in the office of Mr. Perryman and then entered upon the practice of law. He has inherited from his father large landed estates in NH., among which were certain 'proprietor's rights" in the township of Dartmouth, now the town of Jefferson. This property he conveyed by deed of gift to Dartmouth College, in 1769, the year of its foundation, "in consideration of the extensive charity of the design."

Mr. Emery continued to lead a quiet life until the age of fifty when the out break of the Revolution at once brought him to the front. He was made deputy secretary of the Fourth and fifth provincial congress in NH. and was a member of both. When the new government was organized, he became the clerk of its house of assembly and son continued through the greater part of the Revolutionary period. His name appears on the records for the first time under the date 12 Jul. 1781. Within this period he was placed on many important committee; one to make a draft of solemn obligation to be entered into by members (a NH. declaration of Independence); one "to draw up a plan for the Government of the colony during the contest with Great Britain; one to sign the bills of credit and so make them into current money. The earliest records, now in the statehouse at Concord, are in his handwriting; among them that of the official copy of the Declaration of Independence, in red ink.

In 1776, he had been appointed clerk of the courts and this office he continued to hold until the close of his life. His death took place 17 Jan. 1788. He was a stanch patriot, and had an important hand in shaping the destinies of NH.
