743 JOHN BODWELL m. ELIZABETH MESSER 22 December 1748 Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts b. 22 December 1720 [31 March 1732] Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts d. 26 June 1785; m 2) Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts 26 April 1788 ELIZABETH POWERS [BOWERS] b. Merrimack, Hillsboro, New Hampshire

He was Captain in the Revolution in 1776 and was called "Gentleman" in his later years.

In August, 1757, John served as clerk in Capt. Nathan Chandler’s Company that was part of a larger force sent to relieve Ft. William Henry. On August 9, 1757 the fort was captured by the French General Montcalm leading a mixed force of French regulars, Canadians, and Indians. Get the whole story at: The Fort William Henry Massacre. (Source: A List Of Men From Methuen, Massachusetts Who Served In Militia Units During The French And Indian War (1755-1763) by John M. Austin, May 1996.)

Methuen did fully its share in the American Revolution, sending 156 men on the first call in 1775 when there were only 1326 total inhabitants about that time, providing ammunition and supplies for the continental army, and taking in refugees from the British occupation of Boston. Methuen sent 2 delegates, John Bodwell and John Sargent, to the Essex Convention at Ipswich Sept. 6 and 7, 1774. Not counting the brief uprising of 1689, this convention is said to be the real origin of government independent of royal authority in the colonies, protesting the rulings of the English King and Parliament which violated the Charter of the Commonwealth. (“This Is Methuen,” by The League of Women Voters.)

DAR Patriot Index lists John as a Private and then Sergeant from Mass. Another list has him as a Private in the 9th Massachusetts Regiment. Either John or his Son John 1752, turned out at the Alarm of April 19th, 1775, Lexington and Concord, in the company of Major Samuel Bodwell. ( History of Essex County, Massachusetts, p. 298.)

748 SAMUEL BODWELL (Maj.) m. 28 September 1758 Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts ELIZABETH MANSUR.

Samuel procured the right to erect a mill on the east side of Spickett river in 1767. (The Essex Antiquarian, p. 174)

Samuel was 2nd Major, 4th Essex Co. Regiment. He was commissioned February 8, 1776. Samuel also served in Col. Cogswell, Jr.'s Regiment, Brig. Gen. Farleys's Brigade. Regiment marched to Horse Neck, Sept 12, 1776 (Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War, Vol. II)

Johnathon Austin of Methuen; Corporal, Major Samuel Bodwell's Company, which marched on the Alarm of April 19, 1775.

The pay roll of the company under the command of Major Samuel Bodwell, exhibited in consequence of the alarm on the 19th of April: John Bodwell, Private and William Bodwell.

A committee of safety and correspondence was yearly chosen, which kept the people fully posted on every question of interest. The question of entering into a "perpetual union," in accordance with the resolve of the Continental Congress, for all the United States of America, came before the town in February, 1778. The matter was referred to a committed consisting of Maj. Samuel Bodwell , Capt. James Jones, Col. Thomas Poor, Lieut. John Huse, and Mr. Enoch Merrill, who reported favorable thereto, and the meeting voted to "receive and accept the Articles of Confederation and perpetual union," which was a voice for the Union as it was and is, instead of a "Confederacy," as the disulionists of 1860 desired to make it. (History of Essex County, Massachusetts, p.299)
