He resided in Dracut, Middlesex, Ma.; Winthrop, Kennebunk, Me. and Fairfield, Somerset, Me. He was probably on of the first settlers of Fairfield, Somerset, Me. He settled there in 1771 at Emery Hill, buikding the first frame house in that community between 1771-1773,

on the west side of the Kennebec, and was a carpenter and farmer. He was very benevolent.

His home was a stopping place for travelers and all were welcome. He invariably declined to receive pay.

In 1775, when Arnold was making his famous expedition into Canada he made his headquarters at Jonathan Emery's house for two weeks, while his boats and baggage was being transported over the carrying place to avoid the rapids of the Kennebec. Jonathan Emery assisted in repairing Arnold's boats. He was an Indian Scout for eight years, in revenge, it is said for the murder of his brother John. He was an intimate friend of Rev. Paul Coffin.
