WOMAN KILLED IN ERIE YARD
MRS. SUSAN GUNDERMAN RUN DOWN BY PUSHER ENGINE
Picking Coal Five Hundred Feet East of Crossing - Erie
Mrs. Susan Gunderman, wife of William Gunderman was fatally injured while picking coal on the Erie tracks about 500 feet east of the Pike street crossing about 7:30 o'clock this morning by being run over by a pusher engine. The woman had left her home at 61 King street, only a short time before and went to the Erie tracks at the end of Third street and only about 250 feet from her home. She had nearly filled her pail when she walked on a track where pusher engine 1875 was standing in charge of Arthur Billman. With her mind occupied in gathering coal, the woman went up close to the engine. Not being aware that anyone was on the tracks, the engineer started to back up in order to place a caboose which was attached to the front of his engine on the rear of Conductor Mack's train.
Mrs. Gunderman was struck by the tender of the pusher and was thrown to the ground and run over. She was dragged a short distance when other Erie employees nearby saw what had taken place and called to Engineer Billman. He stopped the engine and alighted with his fireman J.J. Reilly. The woman was taken from under the locomotive with her legs badly crushed and nearly severed from her body. She had a number of cuts on her face, hands and arms. It was seen that she was still alive and she was carried to the Port Jervis Hospital where her death occurred soon after.
The remains were taken to the undertaking parlors of C.I. Terwilliger & son, No. 41 Front Street. Coroner E. J. Harding was summoned and made an investigation and gave a verdict of accidental death.
Mrs. Gunderman was born in Sussex County, N.J., 63 years ago and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Emory. In 1863 she was united in marriage to William Gunderman of Sussex County and several years later they moved to Port Jervis where they had since resided.
Those who survive her are her husband, one daughter; Jane, wife of Alvah Dewitt of Port Jervis, and one son; George, at home; three sisters; Mrs. Martha Blackford and Mrs. Robert Vanstone of Swartswood, N.J. and Mrs. Morris Gunderman of Port Jervis, and two brothers; John Emory of Newton, N.J. and Cornelius Emory of Freedon, N.J.
The funeral will be held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alvah Dewitt, No. 7 Franklin Street, at two o'clock, Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Wesley Martin will officiate.
The interment will be in the Sparrowbush Cemetery.

Women Killed Picking Coal
At about 7:30 Friday morning, Mrs. Susan Gunderman was struck and fatally injured by pusher engine no. 1875, in charge of engineer Alfred Billman.
Mrs. Gunderman was picking coal from the tracks. As she was returning and had reached the last track between 2nd and 3rd Street, the engine struck her. The body was pushed along for some distance, when Robert Mc Laughlin, a caller, discovered the body under the wheels and flagged the engineer, who had not discovered the accident, nor was the warning in time to prevent the body from being crushed by the wheels.
She was removed to the Port Jervis Hospital but died before reaching that institution.
An examination showed that both legs and one arm were crushed, and the left side of her head badly bruised.
The remains were taken to the undertaker rooms of C. I. Terwilliger & Sons on Front Street.
The deceased was aged 69 years, and was born at Newton, New Jersey, September, 1840 and was the daughter of John Emery and Marguerite Savercool.
