__ Nathan Emery b. 24 Nov. 1823 Poland Twp. Chautaqua co., NY. d. 5 Nov. 1887 buried Thayer Cemetery Kennedy, NY.;
Nathan Emery died at his home in Poland, NY., Nov. 5, 1887, of paralysis, aged 63 years, 11 months and 11 days. This is briefly written the ending of a more than ordinary life, for his was a nature too marked to be classed with the mass making up the common crowd. In him were mingled the sterling and stern qualites of which reformers are made and the gentler sympathies that so largely aid in moving and sinning the best affections on men.
Had his years been devoted to public duties, his character would have made him very widely known and loved. Devoted as they were to the limited activities of rural life, possible because shared by fewer friends, his virtues won more intense affection. Detesting all shame and rearding truth and honesty as first principles in every manly relation in life, was a constant rebuke to all fraud and trickery, while his hearty appoval of right was a blessed inspiration to all his neighbors. The children were won to him by his cheerful, happy words and smiles, and all in affliction or distress found in his sympathy and help, comfort and healing. In the esteem and love of his neighbors he was greatly honored.
But while other homes, and the entire circle of his acquaintance, were so largely blessed by his life among them, his own home was the great empire of his mind and heart. Here, he fairly lavished the wealth of a generous and bountiful nature, not in external display, but in the love and tenderness that anticipated the wants and secured a constant flow of comforts in his home, and the opening of his own heart to warm and bless his loved ones. The basis of such a character was not in the nature of him who bore it alone, belief in the Bible, and a faith that secured to him thie happiest infulence of Christianity. This gave warmth and sweetness to his otherwise rugged disposition.
The M. E. church at Frewsburg shared his counselsl and services as steward and otherwise, for more than twenty years with great profit. This society, his neigbors, and kindred would gratefully acknowledge the value of his life to them, while mutally mourning his loss. His vigourous consitution was gradually yielding for a few years past, but he murmered not, and when release came suddenly at last he was ready.
The funeral was held from the house where he had resided for forty-seven years, and the casket borne hence by the loving hands of his sons-in-law and three nephews, and just before sunset of the sabbath afternoon following his death his body was laid to rest in the Thayer burial ground.
